Canaan's Avalon Nano 3S is the turnkey end of home mining: a compact, quiet desktop unit that does up to 6 TH/s and just works out of the box. It is not the most efficient miner you can buy, but it is one of the easiest to live with, and on mkpool it solo mines straight to your own wallet. This guide sets one up.

As with any miner on mkpool, there is no account: the address you enter is your identity and your payout destination, so any block the Nano finds is paid to you directly by the network.

What you are working with

The Nano 3S replaced the original Nano 3 with next-generation 4 nm chips, lifting hashrate while keeping the same 140 watt ceiling. Its defining feature is three selectable power modes:

Step 1: Set it up on your network

Power the Nano 3S and get it onto your network following Canaan's quick-start. Depending on your unit and firmware, that is done through the Avalon app or the device's built-in web interface. Once it is on the network and you can reach its dashboard, you are ready to point it at a pool.

The Avalon Nano's onboarding and menu layout are specific to Canaan's app and firmware and change between versions, so use their quick-start for the exact taps. The pool settings below are the part that is the same everywhere.

Step 2: Enter the mkpool pool settings

In the pool configuration, set up mkpool for solo mining Bitcoin:

URL: stratum+tcp://btc.mkpool.com:3333
Worker: your Bitcoin address, optionally with a rig name, e.g. bc1qyouraddress.nano

Use the vardiff port (3333); it auto-tunes to the Nano's few-terahash rate. If your firmware offers backup pool slots, add a second mkpool endpoint with the same address. Here are the live Bitcoin ports for reference:

Step 3: Pick a power mode

Choose the mode that fits where the miner lives. High mode gives the most hashrate and the best solo odds but the most heat and noise; Low mode is the quietest and coolest for a shared room at reduced speed; Medium sits between. Because your chance of a block scales with hashrate, this is a direct trade between odds and comfort. There is no wrong answer, only your preference.

Step 4: Verify it is mining

Save, and give it a minute. Confirm accepted shares and a hashrate near your chosen mode on the miner's dashboard, then find your address on the mkpool miners page to confirm the pool sees it. What to expect

Six terahash is a real but long-odds lottery ticket on Bitcoin. Pointed at a lower-difficulty SHA-256 chain it turns up results far more often. The trade-offs are in which coin to solo mine, and you can put concrete numbers on any choice with the chance calculator.
